The current incarnation of A-1 Builders began in Bellingham in 1976, when Rick Dubrow purchased the company whose roots extended back to 1955. Under Rick’s direction, A-1 Builders led the way in Whatcom County by introducing green building and green business practices. More recently, A-1 Builders has continued to commit to other market segments reflective of the company’s philosophy of thinking long-term. These areas of emphasis include the Universal Design and Aging-In-Place movements, and the importance of integrating sound design practices into the planning of every project. This design/build approach is anchored by the designers and showroom of Adaptations Design Studio. In late 2005 Cindi Landreth, Rick’s wife and owner of Landreth Home Design for 15 years, joined the company as co-owner and manager of Adaptations Design Studio. Over the years, A-1 Builders has been recognized with various awards and is a member, founder and/or supporter of a range of organizations such as Sustainable Connections, RE Sources, Futurewise Whatcom, Whatcom Folk School, and Transition Whatcom.
